The Phoenician Steps

As I mentioned in the previous post, when we walked to the far end of Anacapri, we discovered a set of steps leading down from the area.  The views were fantastic, so we decided to explore a short distance to see where they led.  Unknown to us at the time, we were at the top of the Phoenician Steps, a stairway probably made by Greek colonists to connect Anacapri with Capri and the port, before there was a road.  The steps run all the way from the end of Anacapri down to the town below.

As we started down it seemed like an "adventurous" idea to continue on and see if we could walk all the way down.  It did not look that far!  So, we continued on down the steps and had many fantastic views along the way.  In the photos below you can see the ruggedness and steepness of the steps.  They were not difficult at first, but honestly, we were very tired by the last 25% of the decent and were glad to arrive back at the hotel.  Just going down can still be very tiring! My favorite photo is the one of Linda from above with the road below.  Look closely below the road, to the left of the photo, and you can see the steps continuing on down.  They are just a small gray line or path.  That gives you an idea of the distance we covered.
