Arriving Sorrento

After a fun and relaxing two days in Capri, we took a jet boat from Capri to the port city of Sorrento on Tuesday early afternoon. Arriving in the port of Sorrento, we were amazed to see how Sorrento is built on high cliffs that run up to the sea.  You can see in the photos below how the city is built on the hills and cliffs.  There is almost no level ground in Sorrento, and that is evident when walking around as nearly every street runs up or down the hills.  Walking is common in Sorrento and the locals must be in fantastic shape!

In the first photo below you can see a large white hotel up the hill and in the center of the photo. We think that is our hotel, the Sorrento Hilton.  That looks to be about the distance and amount of walking uphill that we did several times each day.  While it had a great view, which we enjoyed, we missed being on the middle of the city action as we had been in Capri.  Below are a few of our arrival photos and the view from near our hotel.  That is Mount Vesuvias in the distance.  The last of the photos below is a nice shot of the old city, inside the original wall, with the original volcanic paving stones used in all of the original roads and still in great shape and in use today.  The stones are black and quite attractive.

Today Sorrento is a resort town of about 20,000 residents that caters to vacationers from around the world who want to enjoy the beautiful weather and fantastic scenery of the area.  However, it dates back to early Roman times and has Ann interesting history.  You can read more on Sorrento here.
